Howard Mahan selected to CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's At-Large Second Team

The 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America College Division Men's At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has been released and Kansas Wesleyan's Howard Mahan has been selected to the Second Team.

The College Division Academic All-America at-large teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.

The at-large program for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; bowling, crew and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.

Mahan had a 79.75 scoring average in 20 completed rounds in 2015-16 and garnered three Top-10 finishes. Academically, Mahan is a perfect 4.0 student that graduated a year early with degree in business management. He is known as a team leader and is involved on campus participating in several organizations. He also plays in the KWU Pep Band. He is a 4-time President's Honor Roll recipient in all four semesters at KWU and is also a NAIA Scholar Athlete and Academic All-KCAC. He was also named as Valedictorian of the Class of 2016 at month's Commencement.

Senior Jacob Anderson, a swimmer from Olivet Nazarene University headlines the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America College Division Men's At-Large Team.

A native of Clifton, Illinois, Anderson is an accounting major and boasts a 3.73 G.P.A. This marks the second time he made tthe CoSIDA Academic All-America team after he was named to the first team in 2015. The 6-foot-2 swimmer helped Olivet Nazarene to its first-ever NAIA National Championship this year. At nationals, he won the 100 backstroke and placed third in the 200 backstroke and seventh in the 50 freestyle. Anderson was also a member of the 200 medley relay (first), 200 freestyle relay (second), 400 medley relay (first) and 400 freestyle relay (second) teams. In his first three seasons, Anderson helped the Tigers to two national runner-up finishes and one third-place finish. He is a six-time national champion and earned 21 NAIA All-American honors during his career.

There were three student-athletes with a G.P.A. of 4.0 on the men's at-large team. The first team boasts a combined G.P.A. of 3.86, while the second team has a combined G.P.A. of 3.72. The overall G.P.A. for this year's team is 3.78.

There are two other repeat honorees on the men's at-large team: Matthew Cheung of Oklahoma City University and Thommy Johansson of the University of Northwestern Ohio. Both Cheung and Johanssen earned a spot on the second team in 2015 while making the first team this year.

A junior exercise science major from Brisbane, Australia, Cheung carries a 3.90 G.P.A. He helped Oklahoma City to the 2016 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship, the program's 10th title overall. Cheung made the NAIA All-Tournament Team as he placed second overall individually with a four-run score of an even-par 284. For the year, Cheung carded a 72.93 average score, ranking him 16th in the NAIA.

Johansson is a senior men's tennis player for the Racers from Nassjo, Sweden, and registered a 3.97 G.P.A. as a business administration major. He helped Northwestern Ohio to the quarterfinal round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament as the team finished 16-4 overall and as the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament champion. In singles, he went 15-3 overall in going 3-0 in the No. 2 slot and 12-3 in the No. 3 position. At doubles No. 1, Johansson went 7-6 and was 4-1 in the No. 2 doubles tandem. He earned first team All-WHAC honors.

Joining Anderson, Cheung and Johansson on the first team are: Kasey Dunn of Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.), Colin Eriks and Alex Russell of the University of British Columbia, Darryl Grayson of Indiana Institute of Technology, Richard Ortiz of Simpson (Calif.) University, Derek Sivertsen of Oklahoma City and Andrew Williamson of Wayland Baptist University.

Making the men's at-large second team are: Ryan Botts of Cumberland University, Oscar Mancineiras Cornella of Olivet Nazarene, Vincent Dubosclard of Auburn University Montgomery, James Flint of Lindsey Wilson College, Anthony Husher of Dakota Wesleyan University, Kristian Kiland of Doane University, Howard Mahan of Kansas Wesleyan University, Kirk Mitchell of the University of South Carolina Beaufort, Tristan Pace of Harford Community College, Calvin Price of Olivet Nazarene, Jason Schroeder of St. Gregory's University and Rik van Gerwin of Northwestern Ohio.
