KWU Earns Recognition at Collegiate Media Conference

Meagan Contreras, Oxnard, CA, represented Kansas Wesleyan University at the Kansas Collegiate Media Conference in Wichita on April 9-10. The 2017 conference drew 140 journalism faculty and students from 16 colleges. KWU newspaper students Autumn Zimmerman, Concordia, KS; Meagan Contreras, Oxnard, CA; Quentin Carter, Riverside, CA; and Devin Griffee, Marysville, KS; and yearbook students Cassity Morlan, Kechi, KS; Keion Criswell, Macomb, MI; and Grant Sylvester, Humble, TX, attended. They were accompanied by David Silverman, Ph.D., associated professor of Communication Studies, and Chelsea Weaver, yearbook advisor.

The newspaper students won three awards. Autumn Zimmerman placed first for Ad Design and third for Editorial Writing, and Katie Merrill placed third in Sports Photography. The students also sat in on different sessions, including a critique of "The Advance" by the Baker University newspaper advisor. Dr. Silverman critiqued "The Baker Orange."

For the KWU yearbook, Orion Hughes, Marana, AZ, received an honorable mention for Page Layout, and the 2016 yearbook received a Bronze Overall Score. The overall score is based on guidelines and regulations set by KCM. In order to get Bronze, a school must earn 600-799 points out of 1,000, based on seven different categories, each with several subcategories. Yearbook students also attended sessions, including "21st Century Journalism" and "Getting a Job in Corporate Media."
