Kelsey McClure Travels With Fellow KWU Students To Attend 2015 Alpha Chi National Convention in Chicago

Kelsey McClure of Manhattan , KS (66503 ) was among seven Kansas Wesleyan University scholars to attend

the Alpha Chi National Convention in Chicago, IL, March 18-22, accompanied by Kansas Wesleyan faculty members Dr. Steve Hoekstra and Dr. Anita Specht, who is the KWU sponsor for the Kansas Delta Chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Society.

There, Jessica Hauschild presented her original mathematics research "On the Levi Graph of Point-Line Configuration," with proofs. She won the Joseph E. and Bessie Mae Pryor Prize in Mathematics award for best mathematics paper presented at the national convention.

Hauschild also was named as one of 10 recipients nationally to receive Alpha Chi's $2,500 Sledge/Benedict Graduate Fellowship, which will help with expenses as she begins graduate school in the fall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her goal is to complete a Ph.D. in Statistics. There were 64 nominations for the Sledge/Benedict Fellowships, with two students receiving the Robert W. Sledge Fellowship and Hauschild among 10 receiving the H. Y. Benedict Fellowship.

Also presenting at the convention were Kelsey McClure on "The Effects of Music on Exercise," and Alexandria Pierce with an excerpt of her short story "Alltidvinter: the Fantastical Journey of Two Siblings Based on Norweigian Folklore."

Saki Tomita, a KWU student from Hong Kong, played piano for Sarah Draget's vocal performance during the Friday night talent show, with moral support from Vanessa Kressin and Kaitlyn Schwartz.

While there for the convention, the KWU Alpha Chi chapter members donated art supplies to Art Therapy Connection in Chicago, a national service project.

With some 300 chapters and an active presence in almost every state, Alpha Chi actively promotes academic excellence, undergraduate and graduate research, campus academic dialogue, and civic engagement.

STAR CHAPTER On Dec. 2, 2014, Alpha Chi designated the Kansas Delta chapter of KWU as a Star Chapter for 2013-14, the only college or university in Kansas to be so designated and just one of 47 out of some 300 across the United States.
