2015 Jun 5

Laura Nivens , '17, a Computer Information Systems major from Junction City , KS , was accepted to a summer REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, AR. Nivens will participate in research in the field of CyberSecurity, specifically working on the Android security model for protecting the operating system and data in high-tech devices.

"Laura is new to our program this year but is an excellent programmer," said Dr. David Kraemer, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Studies at KWU. "She transferred out of Music Education, and the skills needed for music theory make for excellent programming skills."

The University of Arkansas is known for its Center for Information Security & Reliability, which includes its Database Security Research Laboratory that conducts fundamental and cutting-edge research on issues related to security of information systems and databases.

Nivens was born in Little Rock, AR, and grew up in Blevins, KS, which she said is "just beyond Hope." After she graduates from Kansas Wesleyan in two years, Nivens is including among her considerations the possibility of serving in the United States Air Force as a commissioned officer, following in the footsteps of family members who have served in other branches of the military.
